Drinking, Drugs & Sex

Drinking and Sex

For some people the possibility of sex is exciting but stressful and they use alcohol to relax and build their nerve to get close to someone. The more alcohol they drink however, the more impaired their judgment becomes. This may put them in a situation where they may not be as safe as they could be.

If you use alcohol to relax before sex, before you start drinking you may want to consider ways you can stay safe. Usually this means having condoms on hand and/or being with people who will make sure you are safe. It might also help to role-play, or act out with a friend, how you would negotiate safe sex and condom use in these types of situations.

Drugs and Sex

Some drugs can make a person less sexual, while others can make a person become very sexual. If you use drugs you need to be aware of your desires and behaviors while on those drugs so you can stay safe.

If you know a specific drug makes you become sexual, you need to be careful that you are able to stay safe. Usually this means having condoms with you and/or being with people who will make sure you are safe. It also helps to role-play, or act out with a friend, how you can negotiate safer sex and condom use to protect yourself when you take drugs.

If you are taking a drug for the first time, you could bring someone with you who will help keep you safe. Have condoms with you so if you do become sexual you can increase your chances of being safe.
